Physics Definitions

TermDefinition
Acceleration Increase in rate/speed.
Centre of Gravity A point through which all of the weight of an object appears to act.
Conduction Heat transfer which involves the passing of heat from atom to atom.
Convection Heat transfer which involves the passing of heat from molecule to molecule.
Density How much mass is packed into an object.
Dispersion of Light The separating of light into its different colours.
Electric Current A flow of energy through a conductor.
Force Causes a stationery object to move.
Friction The resistance that a surface encounters when moving over another.
Fulcrum The point on which a lever acts.
Law of the Lever When a lever is balance, clockwise moments equals anticlockwise moments.
Lever A rigid body that can turn about a fixed point (fulcrum).
Magnetic Field The region around a magnet in which the magnetic force can be detected.
Mass The amount of matter in an object.
Power The rate at which work is done.
Pressure The amount of force acting on a unit of area.
Radiation Heat transfer by electromagnetic waves.
Reflection Of Light When light bounces off a flat, clear surface.
Temperature A measure of the hotness of a body.
Velocity The speed of something in a given direction.
Refraction of Light The bending of light as it passes from one medium to another.
Weight The amount of matter in an object.
Work A force causing an object to move in a particular direction.
Latent Heat Causes a change in state, but not in temperature.
Latent Heat of Fusion Causes a solid to turn liquid with no temperature change.
