Physics Definitions
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Acceleration | Increase in rate/speed. |
Centre of Gravity | A point through which all of the weight of an object appears to act. |
Conduction | Heat transfer which involves the passing of heat from atom to atom. |
Convection | Heat transfer which involves the passing of heat from molecule to molecule. |
Density | How much mass is packed into an object. |
Dispersion of Light | The separating of light into its different colours. |
Electric Current | A flow of energy through a conductor. |
Force | Causes a stationery object to move. |
Friction | The resistance that a surface encounters when moving over another. |
Fulcrum | The point on which a lever acts. |
Law of the Lever | When a lever is balance, clockwise moments equals anticlockwise moments. |
Lever | A rigid body that can turn about a fixed point (fulcrum). |
Magnetic Field | The region around a magnet in which the magnetic force can be detected. |
Mass | The amount of matter in an object. |
Power | The rate at which work is done. |
Pressure | The amount of force acting on a unit of area. |
Radiation | Heat transfer by electromagnetic waves. |
Reflection Of Light | When light bounces off a flat, clear surface. |
Temperature | A measure of the hotness of a body. |
Velocity | The speed of something in a given direction. |
Refraction of Light | The bending of light as it passes from one medium to another. |
Weight | The amount of matter in an object. |
Work | A force causing an object to move in a particular direction. |
Latent Heat | Causes a change in state, but not in temperature. |
Latent Heat of Fusion | Causes a solid to turn liquid with no temperature change. |
