| Diction | an author’s word choice. |
| Syntax | the study of the rules for the formation of grammatical sentences in a language. |
| Meter | the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllable in poetry. |
| Rhythm | the repeated pattern of sounds in poetry. |
| Metaphor | comparison of two unlike things, without using like or as. |
| Idiom | expressions that aren't meant to be taken literally. (Out of the blue) |
| Analogy | a similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based. |
| rhyme | the repetition of sounds at the ends of lines. |
| Similes | comparing two unlike things using like or as. |
| Hyperbole | a great exaggeration. (I’m so hungry I could eat a horse) |
| Rhyme scheme | is the pattern of rhyme between lines of a poem or song. |
| Personification | giving human qualities to an animal, object, or abstract idea. |
| Onomatopoeia | words that are spelled the way they sound. |
| Lyric poem | a short poem of songlike quality. lyric · poem, verse form - a composition written in metrical feet forming rhythmical lines. |
| Alliteration | the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words. |
| Symbolism | representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. It can be an object, idea or action. |
| Narrative poem | is a form of poetry which tells a story, often making use of the voices of a narrator and characters. |
| Drama | a literary work intended to be performed by actors for an audience. |
| Act | a major division of a play. |
| Comedy | A movie, play, or broadcast program intended to make an audience laugh. |
