| Term | Definition |

| Evidence | information an author provides to support his or her opinion, including statistics, case studies, anecdotes, and expert opinions |
| Plot | sequence of events in a story, novel, or play. |
| Organizational structure | the arrangement of main points and supporting details in a piece of writing (cause and effect, chronological order, etc.) |
| Biased | an attitude or opinion that favors one side or another; prejudice |
| Unbiased | having no opinion about either side |
| Citation | A quotation from or reference to a book, paper, or author; giving credit to the original author |
| Claim | a stated opinion that reflects the author’s point of view about a subject |
| Informational | a type of writing in which the author presents information about a specific topic |
| Nonfiction | writing that conveys information using facts and other details. Nonfiction tells about actual people, events, or other real-life subjects. |
| Summary | a short restatement of a text in the reader’s own words |
| Hypothesis | an unproved theory; a conjecture |
| Source | a book, person, Web site, article, etc., that provides information |
| Thesis | The main idea of an essay, report, speech, or research paper, often written as a single declarative sentence |
| Paraphrase | using your own words to express someone else's ideas while still preserving the main ideas of the original. |
| Topic | The subject of a speech, essay, thesis, or discourse. |
| Fact | a statement that can be verified independently and objectively. |
| Brainstorm | an informal way of generating topics to write about, or points to make about your topic. |
| Argument | a persuasive attempt to convince others to think or act in a certain way. |
| Revising | to check that a paper is well-organized and to make any needed changes. |
| Citation | a specific reference within a research paper to a source of information. |
