| Imagery | language that appeals to the five senses (sight, sound, taste, and smell) |
| Characterization | the way a sriter reveals a character’s personality; their words and behavior, descriptions of their appearance, thoughts, and feelings, and comments made by others in the story |
| Genre | categories of writing, such as historical fiction, science fiction, etc. |
| Setting | the time, place, and circumstances in which a story occurs |
| Tone | an author’s attitude toward a subject |
| Plot | the sequence of events in a story that includes the characters’ actions, a conflict, and a resolution |
| Mood | the overall emotion created by a literary work |
| Figurative language | the use of words to create an image in the reader’s mind |
| Rising action | the main part of the story, during which the character works to resolve the problem |
| Climax | the turning point in a story, usually the most important part |
| Falling action | the events leading to the solving of the problem |
| Antagonist | a person who is opposed to, struggles against, or competes with another; opponent; adversary. Sometimes, the enemy of the protagonist in a story. |
| First person narrative | the narrator is telling the story from their point of view; writing from the “I” point of view |
| Protagonist | the main character in a literary work (story) |
| Third person narrative | Third person narrative form is writing from the omniscent point of view, using the “he-she” form. |
