| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Atom | What all matter is made of |
| Proton | Part of a nucleus that has a positive charge |
| Neutron | Part of a nucleus that has no charge |
| Element | When something is made out of only one atom |
| Electron | Part of an atom involved in chemical reactions |
| Malleable | Can be smashed without crumbling |
| Luster | Shiny |
| Ductile | Can be drawn in to a thin wire |
| Corrosive | It can rust |
| Density | The quantity of something per unit measure, especially per unit length, area, or volume |
| Noble Gases | Any of the gaseous elements in group 18 |
| Transitional Metals | Any metallic element in groups 3-12 |
| Halogens | Any of the elements in group 17 |
| Alkali Metals | Any of the elements in group 1 |
| Alkaline Earth Metals | Any of the elements in group 2 |
| Conservation of Mass | Matter is never created or destroyed it just reorganizes itself |
| Compound | Made from 2 different atoms that chemically combine |
| Molecule | Atoms combined |
| Covalent Compound | 2 Non-Metals |
| Ionic Compound | Metal and a Non-Metal |
| Lewis Dot Structure | Picture that shows how elements form compounds using valence electrons |
| Substance | Matter that has the same fixed composition and properties |
| Heterogeneous Mixture | A type of mixture where the substances are not mixed evenly |
| Homogeneous Mixture | Two or more substances mixed together evenly on a molecule level but are still not bonded together |
| Solution | Another name for Homogenous |
| Solute | Substance that seems to dissolves or seems to disappear |
| Solvent | The substance that dissolves the solute |
| Precipitate | The result of solutions mixing and creating a chemical change making a solid |
| Physical Change | In which the form or appearance of matter changes but not the composition |
| Vaporization | A liquid changes into a gas |
| Condensation | When a gas changes into a liquid |
| Sublimation | When a solid turns into a gas |
| Deposition | when a gas turns into a solid |
| Chemical Change | Substances are changed into different different substances |
