Figurative Language

irony when the opposite of what is expected occurs
personification when a non-human object or idea is described as having human-like characteristics
repetition when a word or phrase recurs
imagery when an author uses words to appeal to the reader’s senses (smell, taste, hear, touch, see)
symbol an object that represents a bigger idea or concept
simile a comparison of two unlike things using “like” or “as”
metaphor a comparison of two unlike things by saying or implying that one thing is another
extended metaphor a comparison of two unlike things by saying or implying that one thing is another through a long explanation
connotation extended meanings or feelings that evolve around a word over time
denotation the literal meaning of a word
