Figurative Language

| personification | when a non-human object or idea is described as having human-like characteristics |
| repetition | when a word or phrase recurs |
| imagery | when an author uses words to appeal to the reader’s senses (smell, taste, hear, touch, see) |
| symbol | an object that represents a bigger idea or concept |
| simile | a comparison of two unlike things using “like” or “as” |
| metaphor | a comparison of two unlike things by saying or implying that one thing is another |
| extended metaphor | a comparison of two unlike things by saying or implying that one thing is another through a long explanation |
| connotation | extended meanings or feelings that evolve around a word over time |
| denotation | the literal meaning of a word |
