| exposition | an introduction to a story |
| rising action | when the story develops |
| climax | the turning point in a story |
| falling action | the events of a story that lead to the resolution |
| denouement | when the conflict in a story is resolved |
| narrator | the one who tells the story |
| point of view | the perspective from which the story told |
| 1st person POV | when the story is told by someone about themselves “I did this…” |
| 2nd person POV | when the story is told to a person about themselves “you did this…” |
| 3rd person POV | when the story is told from an outsider’s perspective “they did this…” |
| dialogue | spoken words |
| characterization | how an author develops a character (actions, thoughts, dialogue) |
| flashback | a stop in the current time period to look at something that happened in the past |
| foreshadowing | hints at what will happen in the future |
| suspense | a feeling of excitement about what might happen |
| antagonist | the force working against the protagonist |
| protagonist | the character the action revolves around |
| mood | the feeling the reader gets from the text |
| tone | how the author feels about the subject |
| theme | a universal message about life addressed in a text |
