Chemistry Key Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| complex ion | a charged species consisting of a metal ion surrounded by ligands |
| formation (stability) constants | the equilibrium constant for each step of the formation of a complex ion by the addition of an individual ligand to a metal ion or complex ion in aqueous solution |
| ion product | the product of the initial concentrations of the ions of a given solid in a solution; represented by Q and compared to the solubility-product constant (Ksp) to determine if precipitation will occur |
| qualitative analysis | separating a mixture containing all the common cations into five major groups based on solubilities; each group is then treated further to separate and identify the individual ions |
| selective precipitation | a method of separating metal ions from an aqueous mixture by using a reagent whose anion forms a precipitate with only one or a few of the ions in the mixture |
| solubility product constant (solubility product) | the constant for the equilibrium expression representing the dissolving of an ionic solid in water |
