language techniques

| simile | comparison of two things using LIKE or AS |
| metaphor | direct comparison of two things |
| personification | an inanimate object (non-human) is given human characteristics |
| onomatopoeia | when they sound like the the word they describe |
| alliteration | repetition of consonant sounds at he BEGINNING of two or more words e.g. More Music, More fm |
| assonance | repetition of VOWEL sounds within a series of words e.g. the hOOTing tOOT of the car horn |
| rhyme | similarity of sound, usually found at the end of lines e.g. late/fate or follow/swallow. |
| rhythm | the pace or tempo at which a passage moves. reflects underlying meaning unreeling meaning or emotion of a passage e.g. Ballad or sonnet |
| repetition | words or phrases repeated. e.g. It was cold that night, very, very cold |
| hyperbole | over exaggerated phrases or words. e.g. tonnes of homework. I could eat an elephant. |
| pun | play on words. The use of homophones (words that sound the same) e.g. Meat me at the factory (meat works) |
| Cliché | an overused expression e.g. happily ever after |
| imperative | command. e.g. pick up the rubbish |
