What is written on the firemen's helmets? 451
What are the two professional symbols that Montag wears? A salamander on his arm and a Phoenix-disc on his chest.
What does Montag say he always smells like? Kerosene
Who does Montag run into on his way home? Clarisse
Why is it ironic that so many people are afraid of firemen? Firemen generally help people and put out fires rather than starting them.
How do the doors work? They are touch activated-they know you by touch and open automatically.
What is etched on Montag's lighter? A salamander
What did Montag hit with his foot? An empty bottle of happy/sleeping pills.
What is Montag's wife's name? Mildred
What are the two machines being used on Montag's wife? What do they do? A stomach pump, which gets all the bad stuff out of the body, and a blood transmitter which replaces her blood. In other words, the machines suck out the sadness and fill her with happiness. The machines are compared to a snake because it is a long hose.
Where does the laugher that Montag hears come from? Clarisse's house
Explain Montag's toaster. What does it do? It is silver. It pops out the toast where it is then grabbed by a silver hand and drenched with butter and put on the plate.
What did Mildred have in her ears? Seashells, which were like present day headphones, which play music.
What did Mildred remember of the night before? Or what did she pretend to remember? She claimed to remember not sleeping well and feeling terrible. She also claims to remember having a party at their house.
What kind of program is Mildred going to watch in the afternoon? A play that she is in. The plot is similar to that of a soap opera.
Explain Montag's television. What does Mildred want for the television that Montag claims they cannot afford? It is 3 screens taking up 3 walls of the parlor. Mildred wants a 4th wall.
What does Clarissw rub under her chin? Why? A dandelion because if it rubs off it means you're in love.
What does Clarisse's psychiatrist want to know? He wants to know what she does with her free time.
According to Clarisse, how is Montag "not like the others"? He actually listens to her and cares about what she's saying.
Describe the Mechanical Hound. It is a vicious robotic dog that sniffs out books. It has 8 legs and a large need,e that it can kill stuff with.
What do the firemen bet on dull nights? They bet to see which of the chickens, rats, or cats the Hound could kill first, or how fast he can catch them.
What happens when Montag touches the muzzle? It growls.
How did Montag escape the Hound and get to the upper level of the firehouse? He grabbed the pole and it pulled him up.
What is Montag's theory on why the Hound reacted the way it did? He says it doesn't like him.
How many times before had the Hound reacted this way toward Montag? Twice before this time.
Why had Montag never had any children? He says his wife doesn't want children.
What is different about Montag's laugh? It is relaxed and genuine.
Explain a school day in the world of Fahrenheit 451. You watch TV, play sports, learn transcription history (lies about burning books in the past), paint, then play more sports.
Why does Clarisse find it odd that people find her to be antisocial? Because their idea of social isn't social at all, and she is the real social one.
Name one thing that Clarisse talks about that is different today than in the past. Violence has increased; kids kill each other for fun.
