| Literal (adjective, noun) | adjective: taking words in their usual or most basic sense without metaphor or allegory noun: a misprint of a letter |
| Figurative (adjective) | departing from a literal use of words; metaphorical |
| Subtext (noun) | an underlying & often distinct theme in a piece of writing or conversation. |
| Vernacular (noun, adjective) | Noun: the language or dialect spoken by ordinary people in a particular country or region Adjective: spoken as one's mother tongue; not learned or imposed as a second language |
| Acumen (noun) | the ability to make good judgements & quick decisions, typically in a particular domain |
| Advocate (verb) | publicly recommend or support |
| Allege (verb) | claim or assert that someone has done something illegal or wrong, typically without proof that this is the case |
| Ambiguous (adjective) | open to more than one interpretation; having a double meaning |
| Ascertain (verb) | find (something) out for certain; make sure of |

| Arbitrary (adjective) | based on random choice or personal whim, rather than any reason or system |
| Antithesis (noun) | a person or thing that is the direct opposite of someone or something else |
