| literal | involving the ordinary or usual meaning of a word |
| figurative | of words, language, etc. : used with a meaning that is different from the basic meaning and that expresses an idea in an interesting way by using language that usually describes something else : not literal |
| subtext | the implicit or metaphorical meaning (as of a literary text) |
| vernacular | of, relating to, or using the language of ordinary speech rather than formal writing |
| archaic | old and no longer used |
| amiable | friendly and pleasant |
| abhor | to dislike (someone or something) very much |
| audacious | very confident and daring : very bold and surprising or shocking |
| anecdote | a short story about an interesting or funny event or occurrence |
| ambiguous | able to be understood in more than one way : having more than one possible meaning |
| advocate | a person who argues for or supports a cause or policy |
| allege | to state without definite proof that someone has done something wrong or illegal |
| acumen | the ability to think clearly and make good decisions |
| ascertain | to learn or find out (something, such as information or the truth) |
| arbitrary | not planned or chosen for a particular reason : not based on reason or evidence |
| antithesis | the exact opposite of something or someone |
| aesthetic | of or relating to art or beauty |
| accentuate | to make (something) more noticeable |
| abridge | to shorten (a book, a play, etc.) by leaving out some parts |
| bias | a tendency to believe that some people, ideas, etc., are better than others that usually results in treating some people unfairly |
| beguile | to trick or deceive (someone) |
| benign | medical : not causing death or serious injury |
| behemoth | something very big and powerful |
| bane | a source of harm or ruin |
| compelling | very interesting : able to capture and hold your attention |
| criteria | something that is used as a reason for making a judgment or decision |
| coherent | logical and well-organized : easy to understand |
| concede | to say that you accept or do not deny the truth or existence of (something) : to admit (something) usually in an unwilling way |
| contradict | to say the opposite of (something that someone else has said) : to deny the truth of (something) |
| caustic | (adj)-able to destroy or burn something by chemical action |
| concise | using few words : not including extra or unnecessary information |
| construe | to understand (an action, event, remark, etc.) in a particular way |
| cumulative | increasing or becoming better or worse over time through a series of additions |
| coalesce | to come together to form one group or mass |
| cursory | done or made quickly |
| cogent | very clear and easy for the mind to accept and believe |
| chronological | arranged in the order that things happened or came to be using time as a measurement |
| cerebral | related to the mind rather than to feelings : intellectual and not emotional |
| complacent | satisfied with how things are and not wanting to change them |
