Literary terms definitions

TermDefinition
Plot It refers to the actions and events that happen in a literary work.Subplot is less important than the main plot
Conflict The plot of a story always involves some sort of struggle between opposing forces or characters in a short story. 1. Person Vs persons 2. Person Vs society 3. Person Vs nature 4. Person Vs self 5.Person Vs fate
Setting The time and place of the actions of a story.
Characterization It refers to the techniques that a writer uses to develop characters. It can be a human or animal or a creature. How a person looks. 1. Through physical description. 2. Through a character's speech, thoughts,desires,feelings, or actions.
Foreshadowing A writer's use of hints or clues to indicate events that will occur later in the story. It increases suspense, contributes to the mood,and makes the ending seem believable.
Flashback A conversation, and episode,or interruption or an event that happened before the beginning of a story.
Point of view It refers to the narrative method, or the kind of narrator, used in a literary work.The perspective or vantage point from which the story is told.Narrative supplies information about the characters :- Limited first person: I, me or we.
Characterization Cont... 3. Through the speech, feelings, thoughts, or actions of other characters. 4. Through direct comments about a character's nature. 5. Interactions with other characters, personal history or other background information.
Antagonist and protagonist Protagonist is the main character of the story(Good Guy). Antagonist is the main source of the conflict (Bad Guy).
Point of view cont... Limited third person: He, she, they Omniscient third person- Narrator knows what everyone is thinking and feeling. Question- Ask yourself is the narrator reliable?
Symbol A person, place, thing, or event used to stand for something abstract, such as an idea or emotion, in a literary work.
Theme The main idea and the author's statement.
