The Periodic Table

What is the Periodic Table? It's an organized chart of all the known elements in th e universe.
What does the Periodic Table use to represent each element? symbols
How is the Periodic Table organized? Elements are in order of their atomic number (usually above the element)
What is the horizontal row called in the Periodic Table? a period
How many periods are on today's Periodic Table? 7
How many groups are on today's Periodic Table? 18
What is each vertical column called in the Periodic Table? a group (elements in the same group are very similar)
What is chemistry? the study of matter, its properties and its changes
What are properties of matter? observations that are used to identify matter such as; color, shape, texture, mass, volume, temp., and density
What is an element? building blocks of matter
What is an element made of? one type of atom
What is a compound? If atoms bond together (like 2 hydrogen atoms bond to an oxygen atom to form water) also called a molecule
What is a molecule? Molecules are formed by the combination of two or more atoms.
What are the three categories on the periodic table that you need to know? metals, nonmetals and metaloids
What is matter that shatters or breaks when pounded? brittle
What is it called when matter can be pounded into sheets? malleable
What is it called when electricity can flow through matter? electrical conductor
What is it called when electricity does not pass through something easily? insulator
What is luster? The way matter reflects light from its surface. (shiny or dull)
What are characteristics of metals? shiny, conductive , malleable, ductile and varied Reactivity
What are characteristics of nonmetals? usually dull, poor conductivity, brittle, varied reactivity
What are characteristics of metalloids? Some are shiny, some dull semi-conductive (both electrical & thermal), semi-malleable, semi-ductile, varied reactivity
What has organic compounds? anything living

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
