Text Features Practice
| Term | Definition |

| Sidebars | Boxes containing information on a page of a book or magazine article that didn't fit into the text byt that the author wanted to include. |
| Boldface Type | This is the darker type used for titles and headings. This feature calls the reader's attention to words or phrases and indicates they are important. |
| Italics Type | This is the slightly slanted type that is used for titles of book or names of certain objects. Italics is also used to emphasize words or indicate what a character is thinking. |
| Photographs | These supply an image of an object or person and can give extra information about the topic. |
| Captions | These are one or two sentences that explain photographs. |
| Maps | These help you visualize a place the author discusses. They can be a place on the earth's surface. They can allow you to follow the path of an explorer or pilot. |
| Introduction | This is the beginning part of a text that explains how the author thought of the idea for the information. |
| Graphs | Diagrams indicating any sort of relationship between two or more things by means of a system of dots, curves, bars, or lines. |
| Quotes | Show the exact words that a person says. |
| Table of Contents | This provides chapter titles and page numbers. It's also a quick overview of what you'll find in the text. |
| Time Line | This feature shows key dates and events in a persons life. It can also cover the dates of key events in a historical period. |
| Indention | The space at the beginning of a paragraph that lets the reader know they are beginning a new paragraph. |
| Underlining | This is text that features a line beneath it. This is used to emphasize to words or phrases to indicate that they are important. |
