Unit 3: Energy
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Energy | capacity to do work |
| Kinetic Energy | energy of motion |
| Potential Energy | stored energy |
| Chemical Energy | energy associated with chemical change (reactions) |
| Mechanical Energy | energy used to exert a force to produce motion |
| Electrical Energy | associated with electric current (flow of electrons) |
| Heat Energy | total kinetic energy of all particles of a sample. Total kinetic energy of all particles of a substance. |
| Electromagnetic energy/radiaition | energy of electromagnetic waves |
| Combustion | when something is burning |
| Exothermic reaction | reaction that releases energy (Hot) |
| Endothermic reaction | reaction that absorbs energy (Cold) |
| Activation Energy | starting energy required for a reaction to take place |
| Law of Conversation of Energy | Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted to different types of energy. Total energy always stays the same. |
| Temperature | average kinetic energy of particles in a substance |
| Absolute zero | lowest possible temperature |
| Calorimetry | study of heat energy |
| Kinetic Theory of Heat and Temperature | Particles are in constant motion. For all kinds of matter at the same temperature, the average kinetic energy is the same |
| Solid phase | Has a definite volume and shape |
| Liquid phase | definite volume and takes shape of container |
