Define intraregional migration. movement within one region.
Give an example of intraregional migration. moving from Georgia to South Carolina; movement in the south.
Define net migration. difference between the number of immigrants and the number of emigrants.
What kind of net migrations are there and why are they called that?. net-in-migration-- number of immigrants exceeds number of emigrants. net-out-migration-- number of emigrants exceeds number of immigrants.
Define intervening obstacle. an environmental of cultural feature that hinders migration.
Give an example of an intervening obstacle. mountains, rivers, and deserts.
Define migration. permanent move to a new location.
Give an example of migration. moving from Georgia to Alabama.
In what stage was international migration and internal migration mostly. international migration- stage 2 internal migration- stage 3 & 4
Define refugees. people who have been forced to migrate & can't return for fear of persecution.
What kinds of persecution were refugees afraid of?. race, religion, nationality, membership in a social group, or political opinion.
Define voluntary migration. implies that the migrant has chosen to move for economic improvement.
Why would most immigrants migrate to the U.S.?. to be with family and to get better jobs.
Define undocumented immigrants. those who immigrate illegally entering without proper documents.
Define quotas. maximum limits on the number of people who could immigrate to the U.S. from each country during a one-year period.
What is the normal quota?. 2% of total population.
Define push factor. induces people to move out of their present location.
What is a push factor for most immigrants?. poverty
Define pull factor. induces people to move into a new location.
What is a pull factor for most immigrants?. family
Define mobility. more general term covering all types of movements from one place to another.
What is a form of mobility. migration.
