Poetry Terms

| Onomatopoeia | The use of words that imitate sounds. Ex. crash, buzz, hiss. |
| Alliteration | The repitition of initial consonant sounds. Used to draw attention to certain words or ideas, to imitate sounds, and to create musical effects. |
| Imagery | Words or phrases that appeal to one or more of the five senses. |
| Rhyme Scheme | A regular pattern of rhyming words in a poem. |
| Personification | A type of figurative language in which a non human subject is given human characteristics. |
| Narrative Poem | A story told in verse. Often have all the elements of a short story including characters, conflict, and plot. |
| Lyric poem | A highly musical verse that expresses the feelings and observations of a single speaker. |
| Free Verse | Poetry not written in a ryhmical, regular pattern. |
| Symbol | An object that stands for something other than itself. |
| Metaphor | A figure of speech in which is described as though it were something else. |
| Simile | A figure of speech that uses like or as to make a comparison between two unlike ideas. |
| Extended Metaphor | Several connected comparisons are made between two unlike things. |
