Literary Elements: setting, plot, conflict, theme, voice, etc.

| Setting | When and where the story takes place |
| Character (static) | A character that stays the same throughout the story |
| Character (dynamic) | A character that changes as a result of the story |
| Characterization | The way/how a character feels, sees, hears thinks, does, or reacts to others. |
| External conflict | Individual vs. individual Individual vs. nature Individual vs. society Individual vs. supernatural Individual vs. technology |
| Internal conflict | Individual vs. self |
| Plot | What happens in the story Initiating event-where the conflict is introduced Rising actions-The series of conflicts that lead up to the climax Climax-The turning point in the story Falling action-The action that follows the climax Resolution-The end |
| Word choice (mood) | The reader's feelings toward the subject |
| Word choice (tone) | The writers attitude towards the subject |
| Word choice (voice) | The author's personality |
| Symbol | A word or object that symbolizes something else |
| Symbolism | The use of concrete and recognizable things to represent ideas |
| Point of view (omniscient) | All-Knowing |
| Point of view (limited) | Only knows one character's P.O.V. |
| Point of view (1st Person) | Tells the story using words like "I", "me", or "my" |
| Point of view (3rd Person) | Tells the story using words like "he," "she," or "they" |
| Foreshadowing | clues the author gives to help the reader predict what will happen in the story |
| Irony | When the opposite of what you would expect to happen happens |
| Flash-Back | A return to an earlier point in the story |
| Theme | The general lesson of the story |
