Sentences, Subjects, and Predicates
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Declarative Sentence | Makes a statement; ends with a period |
| Interrogative Sentence | Asks a question; ends with a question mark |
| Imperative Sentence | A command or polite request; ends in a period or an exclamation point |
| Exclamatory Sentence | Expresses great emotion or excitement; ends with an exclamation point |
| Simple subject | the noun or pronoun that tells what (or whom) the sentence is about |
| Complete subject | the noun or pronoun along with all the words that modify or describe it |
| Compound subject | two or more nouns in the subject |
| Simple predicate | verb that tells something about the subject |
| Complete predicate | the verb and all of the words that tell more about the subject and that modify the verb |
| Compound verb (predicate) | two or more verbs that relate to the subject |
| Sentence fragments | an incomplete sentence (missing a subject or a verb) |
| Run-on sentence | two complete sentences put together in one sentence without separating them properly |
| Compound sentence | contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinator (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) |
