| types of nouns | proper, common, concrete, abstract, countable, collective |
| verb | word(s) that express actions, events, or states of being |
| compound verb | constructed from a helping verb and another verb |
| most common helping verbs | have, had, were, is, are, been, will, would, could, should, may, might, do, and does |
| pronoun | a word that replaces a noun or another pronoun |
| examples of pronouns | he, she, which, none, and you |
| coordinating conjunctions | words used to link words, phrases and clauses (and, or, but) (connects) |
| subordinating conjunctions | introduce a dependent clause and indicate the nature of the relationship among the independent clause and dependent clause (connects) |
| examples of subordinating conjunctions | after, although, as, because, before, how, if, once, since, than, that, though, until, when, where, whether, and while |
| correlative conjunctions | always appear in pairs; used to link equivalent sentence elements (connects) |
| examples of correlative conjuctions | both...and, either...or, neither...nor, not only...but, so...as, and whether...or. |
| interjection | word that expresses surprise or strong feeling |
| adjectives | a word that modifies a noun or a pronoun by describing, identifying, or quantifying words. It usually precedes the noun or pronoun which it modifies. (describes, limits) |
| adverbs | a word that modifys a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Indicates how, when, where, or how much. (describes, limits) |
| prepositions | a word that links nouns, pronouns, and phrases to other words in a sentence (relates) |
