| To anguish | Mental or physical pain or suffering. to be extremely distressed. |
| Debris | The remains. Left over bits and pieces. |
| Despair | The complete loss of hope. |
| To contemplate | To look thoughtfully for a long time. |
| Recumbent | To be lying down. To be reclining. |
| Stake | an amount of money. A piece of land. |
| Morose | In a sad, gloomy manner. |
| To lumber | To walk heavily. |
| Bindle | A small number of items rolled up and carried. |
| Imperious | To assume power or authority without justification. To be bossy. To have a "better-than" attitude. |
| Euthanasia To Euthanize | To kill animals without pain but instead mercy. To end an animals suffering and misery. |
| Hierarchy | A group ranked by their level of status and authority. A social ranking system. |
| The Great Depression | A world-wide economic depression. The Great Depression lasted from 1929-1942, up until World War 2. A time when 30% of the American working class was unemployed. |
| Racism | Thinking that you have a higher superiority than a different race. Hatred of other races. |
| Migrant workers | A worker that moves to different places from season to season. |
| Mental retardation | A development delay in a person's brain that makes them learn slower and/or develop differently from others. Caused by brain trauma. |
