Arduous adj. requiring great exertion; laborious; difficult ex. I've had fantastic experiences with much smaller-scale, yet still arduous, research projects.
Blithe adj. joyous, merry; carefree, without regard ex. Everyone loved her for her blithe spirit.
Cajole verb. to persuade by flattery or promises; coax ex. You have let her cajole you into bending the rules for her.
Deference noun. respectful submission or courteous regard ex. in deference to his wishes.
Eclectic adj. made up of what is selected from different sources. ex. Their house is as comfortably and colorfully eclectic as his imaginative wife can make it.
Formidable adj. causing fear, apprehension, or dread; intimidating ex. But getting from interest to a viable formula is proving a formidable challenge.
Garrulous adj. excessively talkative in a rambling, roundabout manner, especially about trivial matters; wordy ex. Most of the victims become garrulous , in effect talking themselves to death.
Incipient adj. beginning to exist or appear; in an initial stage ex. an incipient cold.
Lucid adj. readily understood; clear; glowing ex. He insisted he was perfectly alert and lucid , adding that he was not a publicity hound, either.
Mitigate verb. to lessen in force or intensity ex. You can mitigate risk, but you can't eliminate it.
Pariah noun. an outcast. ex. It was an accident, but it made Ray — a fresh, believable hero — a pariah .
Propensity noun. a natural inclination or tendency ex. a propensity to drink too much.
Repudiate verb. to reject as having no authority, with denial or disapproval; to cast off ex. To affirm this as a psychiatric malady is to repudiate the principles of science itself.
Supercilious adj. haughtily disdainful or contemptuous, as a person or a facial expression. ex. One reason was its supercilious tone, which ill accords with its slapdash composition.
Trepidation noun. tremulous fear, alarm, or agitation; perturbation. ex. Holiday fliers know the trepidation of travel on some of the year's busiest dates.
Placate verb. to appease or pacify
Flagrant adj. shockingly noticeable or evident; obvious; glaring: scandalous
Threadbare adj. shabby or poor; meager
