Chemical Reactions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Combination or Synthesis | Two or more substances combine together to form one compound. |
| Decomposition | A compound decomposes into two or more substances. |
| Combustion | All elements combine with oxygen. The most common is the burning of a hydrocarbon (carbon and hydrogen only) to produce carbon dioxide and water. |
| Single replacement | One element replaces either the anion or cation in a compound. The replaced ion is written in elemental form. Metals replace metals, nonmetals replace nonmetals. |
| Double replacement | Two compounds react and exchange cations. Remember when forming a new compound, a cation combines with an anion. |
