Graphs and Data

TermDefinition
survey A question(s) used to gather information.
data Information gathered from a survey.
sample set A group of people used to represent a larger group.
line plot A graphic that uses x's to represent responses.
frequency table A table that uses numbers to show how many times a response occurs.
tally chart A chart that uses tally marks during a survey to show how many times a response occurs.
bar graph Uses rectangles to show and compare data that tells how many or how much.
double bar graph Uses two different-colored bars to show two similar sets of data.
interval The difference between adjoining numbers on an axis.
scale The series of numbers at equal distances along an axis.
line graph Used to show change over time.
trend Shows the general direction in data.
stem-and-leaf plot A convenient way to organize data using numerical order and place value.
histogram A graph that groups data into equal intervals shown on the x-axis.
circle graph Shows how all (100%) of a set of data has been divided into parts.
mean The sum of all the numbers in a data set divided by the number of numbers in the set.
median The middle data value once the data is organized.
mode The data value the occurs most often in the data set.
range the difference between the greatest and least values.
