Classification of Matter

TermDefinition
Matter has mass and volume (stuff that takes up space)
Substance A pure material made with a specific, fixed composition
Mixture 2 or more substances physically mixed together
Element A substance that can be reduced to one atom and maintain all of its properties
Compound 2 or more substances chemically combined - with its own unique properties - not related to the properties of the components
Heterogeneous mixture A non-uniform mixture
Homogeneous mixture A mixture that is uniform throughout
Solution A homogeneous mixture
Suspension A heterogeneous mixture with visible particles
Colloid A heterogeneous mixture with particles too small to see individually - but will scatter a beam of light
Tyndall effect The scattering of light by a colloid
Chemical change A change that alters a substance into a new substance
Physical change A change that alters the appearance of a substance but leaves the nature of the substance unchanged
