Temperature and Thermal States of Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Heat | Thermal energy |
| Temperature | The average kinetic energy within the particles of a substance |
| Absolute zero | A state where there is no kinetic energy within the particles of a substance (O Kelvin) |
| Sublimation | A solid vaporizing - not forming a liquid |
| Solid | Thermal state when the bonds between the particles are rigid; shape and volume are fixed |
| Liquid | Thermal state when the bonds are fluid - particles are free to flow - shape is not fixed but volume is fixed |
| Gas | Thermal state when the particles have too much kinetic energy to be attracted to each other - particles bounce off each other - no fixed shape or volume |
| Plasma | An ionized gas |
