First performed in Germany in 1937. Based on Latin poems by monks in 13th century, which were found in Bavaria in 1803. Written for chorus and orchestra and often performed as a ballet Carmina Burana: "O Fortuna"
ABACA Rondo. A in minor key, B,C in major keys. Written in the 1920s and 1930s. Mazurcas: No. 23 in a minor
Features the trumpet, oboe, violin, recorder. Theme is played by different solo instruments. Tutti sections played by all or most of the istruments together and main theme not heard. Accompaniment instruments are cello and hapsichord. Brandenburg Concerto No. 2: Movement 3
Orchestral suite written 1914-1916. Features a rhythmic ostinato heard through much of the piece that is 5 beats long and includes triplets The Planets: "Mars"
Opera set in Peking, China. Aria from final act, sung by Calef, unknown prince who is in love with Princess Turandot. No one will sleep until she learns his name. Turandot: "Nessun Dorma"
Written for solo trumpet with supporting flute, oboe, french horn, trumpet, timpani and strings. Written in 1796 for his friend who invented a new kind of trumpet that could play more complex melodies, such a cadenza. Main theme heard 10 times. Trumpet Concerto in Eb Major: Movement 3
Written to raise money for a hospital. First performed in Dublen in 1741. King George II stood up during the chorus to show his approval and now everyone does this. One of the most performed choral works in the classical repertoire. Messiah: "Hallelujah Chorus"
ABA form. Each A section has a small aba within it. In the B section, strings and woodwinds play 16th notes, which give feeling of excitement and scurrying around. Cymbals in the A section, the only percussion instrument in the piece. Written for ballet. The Nutcracker Suite: "March"
Performed by orchestra and soprano singers. A theme represents horses going up the mountain. B theme is the call of the Valkyries. Based on Norse mythology. Uses leitmotifs, which are layor and repeated for increased drama. Die Walkure: "Ride of the Valkyries"
Sonata form: exposition, development, recapitulation. Written summer 1788, when he was in debt and his baby daughter had just died. Tragic emotions may be associated with key of g minor for this composer. Symphony No. 40: Movement 1
Intro, first strain, break strin, trio, second strain. 6/8 meter made it suitable for the two-step, a new dance in 1889. Original recording made in 1890 on a phonograph. Reissued on cd in 1999. "Washington Post March"
Wrote in collaboration with husband, artist Wilhelm Hensel. Inspired by one-year trip she and Hensel took to Italy. As a Christmas gift to Hensel, she wrote each piece on colored paper, decorated it with drawings by Hensel, a poem for each piece. Das Jahr (The Year): February, "Scherzo"

Written for a play of the same name in 1811. Imitates sounds of Turkish military marching band, a Mehteran. Mehteran used by king to give courage to his soldiers and scare enemy. Drums, bells, triangles, cymbals, oboes, trumpets. Used dynamics. Ruins of Athens: "Turkish March"
Uses themes from Hungarian gypsy dance music. One of 21, Piano duet published 1869. Later arranged for orchestra. One of the dances performed on piano by composer, was recorded by Thomas Edison representative. "Hungarian Dance No. 5"
Often called the Classical Symphony. Neo-classical with strict classical form but imaginative harmony and orchestration of Contemporary. Wrote at age 25 on vacation without a piano. Written for a small orchestra. Last movement in the 4 movement symphony. Symphony No. 1: Finale
