Argument Words for english

TermDefinition
Term Big point your trying to prove.
Sub Claim Your reason you believe the claim is true.
Evidence Factional proof that support your claim. Can be data, backing, and support.
"So what" (warrant) Connects your reasons and evidence to the major claim and explains why they are important to your argument. Connector; Link; Explanation; Elaboration.
Rebuttal (counter-argument) A good argument that admits the that there are other point of views, and then shows why your argument is stronger.
Rhetoric Using language effectively and persuasively. Three key elements of rhetoric are audience, purpose, and exigence.
Exigence The circumstance, situation, or issue that the speaker is inspired to respond to.
Audience The intended person, people, or group the speaker is trying to reach to.
Purpose The intended outcome of a speech or text.
Appeals The approaches the speaker uses to influence the audience. Well balanced argument will use three methods: ethos, pathos, logos.
Ethos Statements designed to convince the audience of the speaker's knowledge on a subject lending credibility to his/her perspective.
Pathos Statements designed to work the emotions of the audience ultimately intended to influence their feelings about the topic.
Logos Logic and reasoning using support (evidence) to influence the reader.
