Science 9 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Atom The smallest partice of an element that retains the properties.
Boiling Point The point at which a liquid changes it's state to gas.
Conductivity The ability a certain material has to conduct electricity.
Density Ratio of a materials mass to volume.
Electron Negatively charged particle surrounding the nucleus.
Element A pure substance that cannot be broken down.
Hazard Symbol Symbol that indicates the container contains something harmmful.
Mass The amount of material in a substance.
Melting Point The point at which a solid changes it's state into a liquid when applied heat.
Neutron A charged particle in the nucleus of an atom.
Nucleus The center of the atom containing protons and neutrons.
Proton A positively charged partice inside the atom located in the nucleus.
State The State or property of a substance such as a liquid, solid or gas.
Subatomic Particle Particles that are smaller than the atom and are contained inside the atom as well.
Volume The amount of space a substance takes up.
WHMIS System of 8 safety symbols used in Canada to provide information on certain substances which could be dangerous.
