Collard Greens Noun A kale that has smooth leaves. Other than chitlins, collard greens are common food for people in Africa.
Cower Verb To crouch down in fear. I admire strong people. They don't cower by the thought of fighting someone.
Oppress Verb Unjust or cruel exercise of authority or power. I question the thinking behind those who oppress the weak because of their social class.
Heritage Noun Something that belongs to one by reason of birth. Dee said in the story that Maggie should learn more about her heritage, but Maggie knows more than Dee thinks she does.
Doctrine Noun A set of beliefs taught or believed to be true. I believe that everyone has their own unique doctrine that they follow.
Lye Noun A strong solution of sodium or potassium hydroxide. Lye is made from wood ashes and is usually used to make soap.
Furtive Adjective Done in a quiet and secret way to avoid being noticed. When I hear people talking about something interesting, I walk by in a furtive manner so that they would not notice me and move away.
Sidle Verb To walk, but in a quiet and sneaky manner. Every time I want to scare my sister, I wait outside in the dark, sidling my way there so as not to alert my sister of my presence.
Mossy Adjective Covered in or resembling moss. Rocks and trees usually get mossy if they're exposed to rain perpetually.
Inference Noun A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning. In a game I've just finished, it uses inference. It is a mystery and investigation kind of game.
Clabber Noun Sour, curdled milk. My mom always tells me to smell the milk so that I don't pour any clabber in my cereal.
Churn Verb Agitate or turn in order to produce butter. In the old days, people would churn rather than using machines to produce butter.
Organdy Noun A fine translucent silk or cotton fabric usually stiffened and used for women's clothing. Organdy sounds like it is made for rich people to buy and get.
Earnest Adjective Sincere in intention, effort, and purpose. Chloe's earnest conviction to win the basketball game motivated the whole team.
Chitlins Noun Pig intestines. I can't bear the thought of swallowing chitlins. I can't even bear the smell of a pig at a party!
