| Solute | The substance dissolved in a solution |
| Solution | A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances in a single phase. |
| Electrolyte | A substance that dissolves in water to give a solution that will conduct an electric current. |
| Immiscible | Liquids that do not freely dissolve in one another. |
| Concentrated | A relatively large amount of solute dissolved in a solution. |
| Soluble | Capable of being dissolved. |
| Solvent | The dissolving substance in a solution. |
| Unsaturated | A solution that contains less solute than a saturated solution under the existing conditions. |
| Dilute | A relatively small amount of solute dissolved in a solution. |
| Nonelectrolyte | A substance that dissolves in water to give a solution that does not conduct an electric current. |
| Supersaturated | A solution that contains more dissolved solute than a saturated solution contains under the same conditions. |
| Miscible | Liquids that dissolve freely in one another in any proportion. |
| Insoluble | Not capable of being dissolved |
| Colloid | Heterogenous mixture containing particles larger than solution particles but smaller than suspension particles |
| Suspension | Heterogenous mixture whose particles settle out over time and can be separated from the mixture by filtration |
