| Earnest (adj) | Serious and sincere; not lighthearted or playful. Ex: "Earnest prayer, is hard work." |
| Chitlins (African American Soul Food, n.) | Small intestines of hogs that are prepared as food. Ex: "Don't forget to sauté the Chitlins with the onions and garlic." |
| Collard greens (African American Soul Food, n.) | Smooth-leaved kales. Ex: "Do you want some Collard greens in your chicken salad?" |
| Cower (v.) | To crouch, as in fear or shame. Ex: "She cowers whenever the ball's about to hit her." |
| Oppress (v.) | To put down; to crush out; to suppress. Ex: "The Nazi's were oppressed by Hitler." |
| Heritage (n.) | Practices that are handed down from the past by tradition, or culture. Ex: "In my family heritage; it is important to keep our lockets in safe keeping." |
| Doctrine (n.) | A belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a church, political party, or other group. Ex: "We want to treasure the doctrine of God our savior." |
| Lye (n.) | A strong solution of sodium, or potassium hydroxide. Ex: "I believe that the soap that your family uses, contains lye." |
| Furtive (adj.) | Secret and sly, or sordid. Ex: "He looked at her furtively, and made sure she never noticed him." |
| Sidle (v.) | To move sideways. Ex: "Coach always told us that once we learn how to sidle, defending the opponent would be so much easier." |
| Mossy (adj.) | Overgrown with moss. Ex: "Do we really have to hike through this mossy forest?" |
| Inference (n.) | The act of hindering, obstructing, or impeding. Ex: "When there are many people interfering with your personal problems, your problems are most likely to get worst." |
| Clabber (n.) | Raw milk that has soured, and thickened. Ex: "I forgot to put the milk back into the fridge last night, and it turned into clabber overnight." |
| Churn (v.) | A container where cream is agitated to separate butterfat from buttermilk. Ex: "The more milk machines we have, the less we would need to use churn." |
| Organdy (n.) | A sheer, crisp cotton fabric used for tops, clothing, curtains, bed sheets, etc. Ex: "Do you prefer using organdy and silk for your prom dress?" |
