| sonnet | a poem with 14 lines and a fixed pattern |
| ode | a poem where a person expresses a strong feeling of love of respect to someone or something |
| elegy | a poem or song that that expresses sorrow for someone who is dead |
| haiku | a poem three lines long, 5 syllables 1st line; 7 syllables 2nd line; 5 syllables 3rd line |
| epic poems | a very long poem about a mythical or legendary hero |
| ballads | a poem in the form of a song( most the tie about love) |
| concrete poems | poems that explain things you can see, feel, smell, taste, and hear |
| literal | means exactly what the phrase says |
| figurative | has a deeper meaning |
| similes | describing something using "like" or "as" |
| metaphors | describing something not using "like" or "as" |
| analogies | comparing two things |
| cliches | a phrase or opinion that that is overused and betrays a lack of originality |
| alliterations | same letter or sound at the beginning of each word in a sentence |
| personification | nonliving things with living characteristics |
| hyperbole | exaggerating things |
| idioms | sayings that replace words or a sentence that means the same thing figuratively |
| imagery | visually descriptive |
| onomatopoeia | a word that describes a sound |
| mood | suggestive of a particular feeling or state of mind |
| tone | the attitude of a piece of writing |
| lines | sentences of a poem |
| stanzas | paragraphs of a poem |
| refrains | a repeated part of a poem |
| couplets | two lines in a poem that rhyme |
| tercets | three lines in a poem that rhyme |
