Nonpolar covalent bonds Electrons are shared equally
Polar covalent bonds More electronegative atom has stronger hold on electron creating a partial charge
Ionic bonds Strong atom strips away electron, creating cations and anions
Hydrogen bonds Hydrogen partially bonds to highly negative molecues, usually O, N, or F
What is "Brownian Motion" Random movement of molecules
Emergent properties of water: Cohesion & Adhesion, Moderation of temperature, Expansion upon freezing, Versatility as a solvent
What is "heat"? The total amount of energy associated with the movement of atoms and molecules in a body of matter.
What is "temperature"? Measures the intensity of heat (average speed of all the molecules in a body)
Define "solvent" The dissolving agent. For life, usually water.
Define "solute" The substance that is dissolved.
What is an "acid"? Compound that contributes H+ or removes OH- from an aqueous solution.
What is a "base"? Compound that removes H+ or contributes OH- to an aqueous solution.
What is "pH"? Potential of Hydrogen
What is the pH of normal human blood? 7.4, slightly alkaline.
What is the pH scale? 0-14 (acid -> alkaline), 7 is neutral.
