TermDefinition
apocryphal adj. of doubtful authorship or authenticity; spurious ex. Many modern historians believe the tale is apocryphal .
cajole verb. to persuade by flattery or promises; coax. ex. Upon her arrival at such places her first chore was to charm and cajole the villagers into working without pay.
cursory adj. going rapidly over something, without noticing details; hasty ex. Even a cursory glance at the history of communications technology shows a recurring pattern.
debilitate verb. to make weak or feeble ex. There are also those who argue that cellphones ultimately empower rather than debilitate .
egregious adj. extraordinary in some bad way; glaring; notorious ex. The socks-and-sandal combo is perhaps the most egregious fashion faux pas.
furtive adj. taken, done, used, surreptitiously or by stealth; sly; shifty ex. While the relationship was private, it can hardly be called furtive or clandestine.
hedonist noun. a person whose life is devoted to the pursuit of pleasure and self-gratification ex. In his personal life and his screen roles, he cultivated an image as a hedonist who defied social conventions.
laconic adj. expressing much in few words; concise ex. His paintings are similarly laconic , paradoxically filled with emptiness and silence.
peruse verb. to read through with thoroughness or care ex. All of this information is available for you to peruse at any time.
ponderous adj. of great weight; heavy; massive; dull and labored; unwieldy ex. Most academic writing is heavy and ponderous and over-explains.
querulous adj. full of complaints ex. Above all, I do not wish to sound querulous .
quixotic adj. extravagantly chivalrous or romantic; visionary, impractical; impulsive ex. She is a quixotic mixture of illusion and reality.
redundant adj. characterized by verbosity or unnecessary repetition in expressing ideas; prolix ex. But the more narrowly these laws are drafted, the more redundant they may be.
sumptuous adj. luxuriously fine or large; lavish; splendid ex. The festival is a three-day-long celebration that combines sumptuous feasts as well as rigid fasting.
temerity noun. reckless boldness; rashness. ex. The gist: some restaurants had the temerity to serve halal without telling customers.
morose adj. gloomily or sullenly ill-humored, as a person or mood ex. I've been so morose today, thinking of everything I failed at.
callous adj. hardened; insensitive; indifferent; unsympathetic verb. to make or become hard or callous ex. We shouldn't relax our standards, but we shouldn't be unnecessarily callous , either.
austere adj. severe in manner or appearance; uncompromising; strict; grave ex. But in austere times, even the rich and famous dial it down.
