STATS Test 2

QuestionAnswer
Discuss the range of possible values for probabilities. Give examples to support each. 0-1; range of probabilities is 0, 1, or a value between 0 and 1. 0 is not possible and 1 is going to happen.
A class consists of 46 women and 81 men. If a student is randomly selected, what is the probability that the student is a woman? 46/127.
Is it "unusual" to get a 12 when a pair of dice is rolled? yes.
Is it "unusual" to get 9 when a pair of dice is rolled? no 2/21= .095
A multiple choice question has 16 possible answers, only one of which is correct. Is it "unusual" to answer a question correctly if a random guess is made? no 1/16= .063
A spinner has equal regions numbered 1 through 15. What is the probability that the spinner will stop on an even number or a multiple of 3? 2/3
The probability that an event will occur is 0.2. What is the probability that the event will not occur? 0.8
A bin contains 71 light bulbs of which 9 are defective. If 6 light bulbs are randomly selected from the bin with replacement, find the probability that all the bulbs selected are good ones. 0.443
You are dealt two cards successively (without replacement) from a shuffled deck of 52 playing cards. Find the probability that the first card is a queen. 4/663. (4/52 x 4/51)
A study conducted at a certain college shows that 53% of the school's graduates find a job in their chosen field within a year after graduation. Find the probability that among 7 randomly selected graduates, at least one finds a job in his or her chosen f 0.995
If one of the 255 subjects is randomly selected, find the probability that the person is over 40 years of age. 1/3 (85/255)
Relative frequency= number of times event A occurs/ number of time the procedure is repeated
Classical= number of different way event A can occur/ number of different simple events possible (sample space)
What is mutually exclusive? events cannot happen at the same time ex. being catholic and jewish.
What is independent? the probability of one even does not affect another's probability ex. being a female and playing soccer.
What is P(BIA)? probability that event B occurs given event A has already occurred.
What do we know if P(BIA) is not the same as P(B)? if P(BIA) does not equal P(B) then the events are dependent.
