equation a mathematical sentence that contains an equal sign, stating that two quantities are equal
inverse operations two operations that undo each other; used to solve equations with a variable
expression a number sentence that contains operations, numbers, and or variables without an equal sign
evaluate to solve an expression
order of operations a set of rules for evaluationg an expression involving more than one operation, PEMDAS
area the number of square units needed to cover a two dimensional figure
perimeter the distance around the outside of a figure
volume the number of cubic units needed to fill the space inside a 3-D solid
variable a letter used to represent a number
