Poetry/Novel Terms - match terms with definitions

QuestionAnswer
onomatopoeia the word is like the sound
alliteration the initial consonant sound is repeated
assonance the same vowel sound is repeated in several words
simile uses 'like' or 'as' to compare
metaphor one thing IS another (no 'like' or 'as')
personification giving non-human things human abilities or characteristics
cliché a saying that is over-used and becomes boring
rhyme words that sound the same except for a letter or two; used in poetry often
repetition the same word said twice or more within a short space of text
pun a word or phrase that has a double meaning
irony the opposite of what you expect to happen
hyperbole exaggerating - making something bigger, better, faster etc. than it really is
