Rhetorical devices

Common devices and literary elements used on the AP English Lang&Comp Exam

TermDefinition
Allegory A story in which people, things and events have another meaning. Ex: Animal Farm
Alliteration Repetition of initial consonant sounds
Allusion A reference to a well- known work of art, pop culture, or history
Apostrophe To address an absent person or quality
Antithesis Contrast of ideas by means of parallel arrangement of words or sentences
Euphemisim Figure of speech using indirection to avoid offensive bluntness
Hyperbole An extreme exaggeration
Irony When the opposite of the normal or expected occurs
Metaphor An indirect comparison not using like or as.
Metonymy A substitute name that is an attribute or associated with the original word, not a nickname
Oxymoron A combination of opposite or contradictory terms.
Paradox A statement that seems self-contradictory or absurd but in reality expresses a possible truth
Personification Giving something not human, human- like qualities.
Pun Use of a word in a way to suggest two or more of it's meanings.
Simile A direct comparison using "like" or "as"
Soliloquy A speech in which a character who is alone speaks his or her thoughts aloud
Synecdoche Substitute name which represents a part of a whole
Cliché An idea or expression that is overused
Rhetorical question A question that does not expect a reply
Ethos Rhetorical persuasion strategy where the speaker presents his/ her emotions to the audience; ethics
Diction Literary word choice
Conceit An extended metaphor
Pathos Rhetorical persuasion strategy that appeals to the audience emotions
Foreshadowing The suggested outcome of future events are hinted at during a story
Theme An overall idea or message of a literary work
Symbol Something that stands for itself but also something elsE
Motif Recurrent image, word, etc... meant to unify a literary work
Assonance Repetition of internal vowel sounds
