QuestionAnswer
scientific process that validates and refines existing knowledge and generates new knowledge that directly and indirectly influences nursing practice nursing research
integration of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient needs and values evidence-based practice
empirical knowledge generated from the synthesis of quality study findings to address a practice problem best research evidence
the knowledge and skills of the healthcare professional providing care clinical expertise
identifying and understanding the nature of nursing phenomena and relationships among them description
Examples of Research focused on description: ID response to health conditions ID cluster of s/s of dz Determine hlth prmotion & illness prevention determine incidence of dz (H1N1)
clarifies the relationships among phenomena and ids the reasons why certain events occur explanation
Research focused on explanation examples *determine the assessement data *link asssessment data to dx *link causes to illness, morbidity & mortality *determine relationships among hlth risks, hlth behaviors, and hth status
estimate the probability of a specific outcome in a given situation prediction
Research on Prediction examples *prediction of risk of dz in diff population * prediction of behaviors that promote hlth and illness *prediction of hlth care required based on pts need & values
ability to write a prescription to produce the desired results control
in-depth analysis and systematic description of one pt or a group of pts to promote understanding of hlthcare interventions case study
important methodology for documenting the effectiveness of healthcare services in the 1980's and 1990's. outcomes research
essential information acquired in many ways, expected to be an accurate reflection of reality, and incorporated and used to direct a person's actions knowledge
include truths or beliefs that are based on customs and trends traditions
a person with expertise and power who is able to influence opinion and behavior authority
appropriation and use of knowledge from other fields to guide nursing practice borrowing
_________ is an approach w/ unknown outcomes that is used in a situation of uncertainty in which other sources of knowledge are unavailable trial and error
gaining knowledge by being personally involved in an event, situation, or circumstance personal experience
_______ is learning by imitating the behaviors of an expert role modeling
expert nurse serves as teacher, sponsor, guide, and counselor for a novice nurse mentorship
an insight into or understanding of a situation or event as a whole that usually cannot be explained logically intuition
processing and organizing of ideas in order to reach conclusions reasoning
moves from the specific to the general; particular instances are observed and then combined into a larger whole or a general statement inductive reasoning
a headache is an altered level of health that is stressfull & terminal illness is an altered level of health that is stressful. Therefore it can be induced that all altered levels of health are stressful. This is an example of.... inductive reasoning
moves from the general to the specific or from a general premise to a particular situation or conclusion deductive reasoning
proposition is a statement of the proposed relationship between two or more concepts. premise
All human beings experience loss. All adolescents are human beings. Therefore it can be deduced that all adolescents experience loss. This is an example of deductive reasoning
These research methods are needed to generate evidence for goals of the nursing profession: * promote & understand pt experience w/ health/wellness * implement nursing interventions to promote pt hlth * providing high-quality, cost-effective care within the hlth care system
is a formal, objective, systematic process in which numerical data are used to obtain information about the world. Quantitative research
a systematic, subjective approach used to describe life experiences and situations and give them meaning. Method of understanding the unique, dynamic, holistic nature of human beings. Qualitative research
focuses on examining the result of care or determine the changing in health status for the patient. outcomes research
4 areas that require examination through outcomes research are the following: 1) pt responses to interventions 2) fxn maintenance or improvement of physical fxnin for the pt 3) financial outcomes achieved w/ the provision of healthcare 4) pt satisfaction w/ the health outcomes, care received, & healthcare services
best research evidence provides the following 3 things 1) description of strategies used to synthesize research evidence 2) model of levels of research evidence available 3) link of the best research evidence to evidence based guidelines for practice
this is a structured, comprehensive syntehsis of quantitative and outcomes studies in a particular healthcare area to determine the best research evidence available for expert clinicians to use to promote an EBP systematic review
summary of research evidence from highly controlled studies about a particular problem in practice systematic review
What types of research are included in a systematic review? Quantitative and outcome studies (randomized clinical trials)
Is systematic review narrative, statistical or both? both
is meta-analysis narrative, statistical or both? statistical
is Integrative review narrative, statistical or both? narrative
is metasummary narrative, statistical or both? narrative
is metasynthesis narrative, statistical or both? narrative
What type of research uses quantitative and outcomes studies with similar methodology that usually includes randomized clinical trials. It also includes meta-analysis and integrative reviews focused on the practice problem. systematic review
This type of research includes quantitative studies with similar methodology, such as quasiexperimental and experimental studies focused on the effect of an intervention or correlational studies focused on a relationship. It also includes outcome studies. meta-analysis
this type of research includes quantitative, outcomes, and qualitative studies that test theory and qualitative studies that generate theory so the synthesis also includes theoretical literature. integrative review
This type of research summarizes existing qualitative studies and provides the basis for metasynthesis metasummary
this type of research is the use of original qualitative studies and metasummaries to produce synthesis. metasynthesis
What is the strongest or best research evidence (list top 4)? 1. systematic review of experimental studies (RCT) 2. meta-analysis of experimental quasi-experiemntal and outcomes 3. integrative reviews of experimental (RCT), quasi-experimental, and outcomes 4. single experimental study
are rigorous, explicit clinical guidelines developed based on the best research evidence available in that area evidence-based guidelines
What is an extremely important source for evidence-based guidelines in the US is the... National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC)
involves careful examination of all aspects of a study to judge its strengths, limitations, meaning, and significance critical appraisal of research
this is a study that statistically pools the results from previous studies into a single quantitative analysis that provides on of the highest levels of evidence fore an interventions efficacy. Objective meta-analysis
This can be performed on correlational studies to determine the type or strength of relationships among selected variables meta-analysis
this type of research includes the ID, analysis, and synthesis of research findings from independent quantitative, outcomes, and qualitative studies to determine the current knowledge. integrative review
this is the process and produce of systematically reviewing and formally integrating the findings from qualitative studies qualitative research synthesis
Qualitative research synthesis includes two categories: qualitative metasummary and qualitative metasynthesis
this is the synthesis of summing of the findings across qualitative reports to develop a description of current knowledge in an area qualitative metasummary
This provides a fully integrated, novel description or explanation of a target event or experience versus a summary view of that event or experience. qualitative metasynthesis
randomizing subjects into groups, collecting data, and conducting statistical analyses. experiment
a formal, objective, rigorous, systematic process for generating numerical information about the world. quantitative research
What are types of quantitative research? descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, and experimental
