What are Disinfectants? Chemical product that destroy all bacteria, fungi, and viruses on surfaces
State Regulatory Agencies stand for what? To protect professionals and costumers. they include licensing agencies, state board of cosmetology, commissions, and health department.
Laws are also known as what? Statutes
Infection is? The invasion of the body tissue by disease causing pathogens
Bacteria Are one celled microorganisms that have both plant and animal characteristics
Microorganism Is any organism of microscopic or submicroscopic size
Types of Bacteria Pathogenic and Nonpahtogenic
Pathogenic Bacteria that is harmful
Nonpathogenic Bacteria that is harmless
What Pathogenic bacteria rarely moves? Cocci
Motility Self movement
Bacteria consist of an outer cell wall that contains liquid called? Protoplasm
The life cycle of bacteria consists of two distinct phases that are? The active stage and the inactive stage or spore forming
Inflammation A condition in which the body reacts to injury, irritation, or infection. Characterized as redness, heat, pain, and swelling

Contagious disease (communicable disease) When a disease spreads from one person to another person
Virus Parasitic submicroscopic particle that infects and resides in the cell of a biological organism
Bloodborne Pathogens Disease-causing microorganism that are carried in the body by blood or body fluids, such as hepatitis and HIV
Hepatitis Bloodborne virus that causes disease and can damage the liver
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) A desease that breaks down the body's immune system
Fungi Microscopic plant parasites that include molds, mildews, and yeasts. They can produce contagious diseases such as ringworm
Mildew Another fungus affects plants or grows on inanimate objects but does not cause human infection
Tinea Pedis A ringworm fungus on the foot
Parasites Organisms that grow, feed, and shelter on or in another organism. Host
Scabies A contagious skin disease and is caused by the itch mite, which burrows under the skin
Immunity The ability of the body to destroy and resist infection
Natural Immunity Partly inherited and partly developed through healthy living
Acquired Immunity Immunity that the body develops after overcoming a disease
There are three ways to clean your tools or implements. What are they? 1) Washing with soap and warm water, then scrubbing them with a clean and properly disinfect nail brush. 2) Using an ultrasonic unit. 3) Using a cleaning solvent (on metal bits for electric files)
Allergy A reaction to extreme sensitivity to certain foods, chemicals, or other normally harmless substance
Efficacy Effectiveness with which a disinfecting solution kills organisms when used according to the label instructions
Quaternary ammonium compound also know as quats Disinfectants that are very effective when used properly
Phenolic disinfectants Can be harmful to the environment if put down the drain
Bleach household bleach, 5.25 percent sodium hypochlorite is an effective and has been used extensively as a disinfectant
Single-use Must be throne away after each use
Multiuse Can be reused
Universal Precautions Guidelines published by OSHA that require the employer and employee to assume that all human blood and body fluids are infectious for bloodborne pathogens.
What is OSHA? To regulate and enforce safety and health standards.
Antiseptics Chemical germicides formulated for use on skin. never use to disinfect instruments or other surfaces
Disinfectants Chemical products that destroy all Bacteria, Fungi, and Viruses (but not spores) on surfaces
Bacilli Short rod-shaped, they are the most common bacteria
Sterilization The process that completely destroys microbial life, including spores
Spirilla Spiral or corkscrew shaped bacteria, they are subdivided into subgroups
Bioburden The number or organisms on anything before sterilization
Toxins Various poisonous substance produced by some microorganisms (bacteria and viruses)
Cocci Round shape bacteria that appear singly alone or in groups. Not active
Sodium Hypochlorite Bleach
