The Vocab From Chapter 1

TermDefinition
Accuracy The precision of the data
Atom The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element.
Chemical Property A property relating of a substance's ability to undergo changes that transform it into different substances.
Chemical Reaction A change in which one or more substances are converted into different substances.
Chemistry The study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter and the changes it undergoes.
Compound A substance that is made from the atoms of two or more elements that are chemically bonded.
Density The amount of matter in a certain amount of volume. The more matter in the same volume, the higher the density.
Element A pure substance made up only of one kind of atom.
Gas State of matter that has neither a definite volume nor a definite shape.
Liquid State of matter that has a definite volume but an indefinite shape.
Mass The measure of matter in an object.
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Physical Property A characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance.
Precision The exactness of the data in an experiment.
Product A substance that is formed by a chemical change.
Qualitative Data that can be portrayed with descriptions and characteristics.
Quantitative Data that can be portrayed as numbers.
Reactant A substance that reacts in a chemical change.
Solid State of matter that has a definite volume and a definite shape.
Volume The amount of three-dimensional space an object takes up.
