11th Grade Literary Terms Set A

TermDefinition
Allegory Poetry or prose that has a literal meaning and one or more symbolic meanings
Analogy A comparison made between two things to show how they are alike
Aphorism A brief, cleverly-worded statement that makes a wise observation about life
Carpe Diem The view that one should enjoy life to the fullest ( "seize the day")
Conceit An extended metaphor that compares two startlingly different subjects
Dramatic Monologue Poetry or prose in which a speaker speaks to one or more listeners
First Person A point of view in which a limited narrator is a character in the story or work
Lyric Poem A poem that expresses the thoughts and feelings of the speaker in a musical way
Mood The emotional response a work of literature stimulates in the reader
Motif A reoccurring symbol, theme, etc. in an author's work(s)
Oxymoron A brief phrase that combines opposite or contradictory terms
Paradox A statement that appears contradictory but reveals a kind of truth
Point of View The perspective from which a speaker or writer recounts a narrative or presents information
Realism A literary movement that attempts to depict life accurately without idealizing or romanticizing
Third Person Limited A point of view in which an outside narrator does not have the power to tell the thoughts and feelings of the characters or foreshadow the future
Third Person Omniscient A point of view in which an all- knowing, outside narrator can tell the thoughts and feelings of the characters and foreshadow the future
