Poetic Devices for poetry unit

TermDefinition
Simile A comparison between two things using the words "like" or "as." Examples: "She runs like a deer." "Your eyes are as blue as the sea."
Metaphor Comparison between two essentially unlike elements. Examples: "The track runner was a gazelle." "My heart is a blinking nintendo."
Personnification A special form of metaphor in which human characteristics are attributed to things or ideas. Examples: "The sun smiled." "Hope stepped into the living room."
Hyperbole A deliberate exaggeration used for emphasis or effect; an extravagant statement. Examples: "I’ve told you a million times,” "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse."
Repition Repetition of words, phrases, or sounds.
Alliteration The intentional repetition of beginning consonant sounds, in two or more words. Example: "Roger ran rapidly." "Don't drink and drive.
Onomatopoeia A figure of speech in which a word used sounds like what it represents. Examples: "buzz, fizz, smash, drip, crash, pop, etc."
Consonance Not rhyme** The repetition of word-ending consonant sounds. Examples: "First and last," "odds and ends," "short and sweet," "a stroke of luck."
Assonance Not rhyme** The repetition of internal vowel sounds. Example: "Blue shoe goo smells like p__." :) "Sit still until winter sets in.
Sibilance Sibilance is a special form of alliteration using the softer consonants that create hissing sounds, or sibilant sounds. These consonants include s and sh. Sing a Song of Sixpence is a song title that is a good example of sibilance.
Imagery Words or phrases that appeal to any sense or combination of senses, such as sight, smell, taste, touch, bodily awareness, and/or muscular tension.
Meter The recurrence of a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.
Rhyme The similarity of ending sounds existing between two words.
Cadence and Rhythm Essential to all poetry: cadence and rhythm are the meter, the beat, the pulse of speech - the rhythmic flow of words. Having good rhythm, and using changes to emphasize key points, is one of the most powerful tools to effective delivery.
