Anglo-Saxon Period

Describe the Celts. 2 groups migrated to the British Isles between 800 and 600 BC
Who were the Brythorns? Became Britons. Settled on the biggest island or Briton.
Who were the Gaels? Settled on the second biggest island which is now known as Ireland.
What language family did the Gaels and Britons speak? Celtic, although their individual languages were different.
Was the Celtic language Germanic? No. The Germanic language was from the Anglo-Saxons.
What was the root of the Anglo-Saxon language? German
What was the lifestyle of the Celts? They were farmers and hunters organized into clans with a chieftain. They were fiercely loyal to their chieftain.
Who were the religious leaders of the Celts? Druids.
What is an epic? A long heroic poem that preserved the people's myths about the past.
What were the duties of the Druids? Preside over religious rituals. Recite the memorized epics to remind the people of their history.
Who conquered Britain after the Celts? The Romans.
Which Roman Emperor declared Britain conquered? What year? Julius Caesar. In 55 AD. He didn't actually conquer Britain. He and his men just landed on the shores of Britain.
When and who actually conquered Britain? About 155 AD, Roman Emperor Claudius sent troops that spread out over Britain and built camps that became towns.
How long did Rome rule Britain? 300 years, until 407 AD.
