Lesson 3: Solving Equations and Inequalities

equivalent equations | equations that have the same solution(s) |
addition property of equality | adding the same number to each side of an equation produces an equivalent equation |
subtraction property of equality | subtracting the same number from each side of an equation produces an equivalent equation |
isolate | a process by which an equation is manipulated to get a variable alone on one side of an equation with a coefficient of 1 |
inverse operation | an operation that "undoes" a given operation |
multiplication property of equality | multiplying the same nonzero number to both sides of an equation produces an equivalent equation |
dividing property of equality | dividing the same nonzero number to both sides of an equation produces an equivalent equation |
identity | an equation that is true for every possible value of a variable |
literal equation | an equation that involves two or more variables |
formula | an equation that states a relationship among quantities |
solution of an inequality | any number that makes the inequality true |
equivalent inequalities | inequalities that have the same solutions |
