| addition property of equality | adding the same number to each side of an equation produces an equivalent equation |
| subtraction property of equality | subtracting the same number from each side of an equation produces an equivalent equation |
| isolate | a process by which an equation is manipulated to get a variable alone on one side of an equation with a coefficient of 1 |
| inverse operation | an operation that "undoes" a given operation |
| multiplication property of equality | multiplying the same nonzero number to both sides of an equation produces an equivalent equation |
| dividing property of equality | dividing the same nonzero number to both sides of an equation produces an equivalent equation |
| identity | an equation that is true for every possible value of a variable |
| literal equation | an equation that involves two or more variables |
| formula | an equation that states a relationship among quantities |
