Geometry Chapter 9 K
Extending Transformational Geometry
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| isometry | a transformation that does not change the shape or size of a figure |
| composition of transformations | one transformation followed by another |
| glide reflection | the composition of a translation and a reflection across a line parallel to the translation vector |
| symmetry | exists when a figure has a transformation that will take it to itself |
| line symmetry | exists when a figure can be reflected across a line resulting in itself |
| line of symmetry | a line that divides a figure into 2 congruent parts |
| rotational symmetry | exists when a figure can be rotated and still look like itself |
| translation symmetry | exists when a figure can be translated and still look like itself |
| frieze pattern | a pattern that has translation symmetry along a line |
| glide reflection symmetry | exists when a figure looks like itself after it has been through a glide reflection |
| tessellation | a repeated pattern that completely covers a plane with no gaps or overlaps |
| enlargement | a dilation where the scale is bigger than 1 |
| reduction | a dilation where the scale is less than 1 |
