ion an atom or group of atoms that has a positive or negative charge
cation an atom or group of atoms that has a positive charge due to loss of one or more electrons
anion an atom or group of atoms that has a negative charge due to gain of one or more electrons
polyatomic ion a group of atoms that are covalently bonded together and act as one unit; the unit has a charge due to the imbalance of protons and electrons
ionic bond a chemical bond in which electrons are transferred from one atom to another causing an electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
covalent bond a chemical bond in which electrons are shared between atoms
metallic bond a chemical bond in which the electrons flow from atom to atom
single covalent bond a chemical bond in which one pair of electrons are shared
double covalent bond a chemical bond in which two pairs of electrons are shared
triple covalent bond a chemical bond in which three pairs of electrons are shared
Lewis electron dot structure a way of showing atoms and their valence electrons
alkane compound containing carbon and hydrogen with all single bonds
isomers chemical compounds that have the same formula but different structures
functional group the part of an organic molecule that determines its type
organic compound carbon compounds (other than carbonates, carbon oxides) which exist in a variety of forms
