DCE Chemistry Unit 4.1 Vocabulary
Term | Definition |
---|---|
ion | an atom or group of atoms that has a positive or negative charge |
cation | an atom or group of atoms that has a positive charge due to loss of one or more electrons |
anion | an atom or group of atoms that has a negative charge due to gain of one or more electrons |
polyatomic ion | a group of atoms that are covalently bonded together and act as one unit; the unit has a charge due to the imbalance of protons and electrons |
ionic bond | a chemical bond in which electrons are transferred from one atom to another causing an electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions |
covalent bond | a chemical bond in which electrons are shared between atoms |
metallic bond | a chemical bond in which the electrons flow from atom to atom |
single covalent bond | a chemical bond in which one pair of electrons are shared |
double covalent bond | a chemical bond in which two pairs of electrons are shared |
triple covalent bond | a chemical bond in which three pairs of electrons are shared |
Lewis electron dot structure | a way of showing atoms and their valence electrons |
alkane | compound containing carbon and hydrogen with all single bonds |
isomers | chemical compounds that have the same formula but different structures |
functional group | the part of an organic molecule that determines its type |
organic compound | carbon compounds (other than carbonates, carbon oxides) which exist in a variety of forms |
