GCSE English: Persuasive Techniques
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Personal Pronouns | Use words such as, 'I', 'you' and 'we' to build a connection with the audience. |
| Exaggeration | Make things sound slightly more extreme than they are in reality (also known as hyperbole). |
| Repetition | Use the same word or phrase more than once to increase its impact (don't overdo it though!) |
| Statistics (facts and quotes too!) | Make use of factual data to support your statements; giving credibility and building trust with the audience. |
| Undermine opposing views | Acknowledge the opposite view but find flaws in it to make your own argument more robust. |
| Anecdote | Use a short and amusing/interesting story about a real life person/event to bring your argument alive. |
| Direct address | Address your audience directly (with humour or rhetorical questions) to continue building a connection. |
| Emotive language | Use words and phrases that will appeal to your audience's emotions and evoke an emotional response. |
